RUC GC Foundation to mark centenary of distinguished police service

 The Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross (RUC GC) Foundation is to mark the centenary of policing in Northern Ireland with a host of major events to highlight the commitment, sacrifice and distinguished service of officers.

The Chair of the RUC GC Foundation, Stephen White OBE, said the anniversary will see the emphasis placed on remembrance and acts of courage and heroism since the formation of the RUC in June 1922.

The centenary will be marked at Church Services in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast

On November 18th, 2021, having been postponed twice due to Covid, the inaugural Royal Ulster Constabulary GC Foundation Annual Lecture took place at Queens University, Belfast. The speaker was former Chief Constable Sir George Hamilton QPM who had served in the RUC, PSNI and GB constabularies.

Sir George’s lecture was entitled ‘Remembering, Respecting, Learning and Progressing’ – a personal and professional analysis of the transition from Royal Ulster Constabulary GC to Police Service of Northern Ireland.

On 11th November 2021 RUCGC Foundation Chairman Stephen White OBE and Thelma Corkey BEM Chair of the RUC GC Widows Association attended the official opening ceremony at the Field of Remembrance in Westminster Abbey. For the first time a new plot to mark the sacrifices of the RUC GC is now in this poignant and prestigious location.

Despite Covid-19 restrictions the RUC GC Foundation was again able to organise an Act of Remembrance, which was held within the RUC GC Memorial Garden.

REOPENING OF RUC GC MEMORIAL GARDEN

Thursday, August 26th 2021, was a very special day for the Royal Ulster Constabulary GC Foundation and a cause for celebration for its Chairman, Trustees, Volunteers and staff. It was also a very special day for all ex-members of the RUC GC and their families – especially those who value the role played by the RUC GC Memorial Garden in marking the sacrifices and honouring the achievements of the RUC. On Friday 5th March, chairman Stephen White welcomed new trustee, Joanne Bunting, to the RUC GC Foundation. Joanne met

office staff and visited the RUC Memorial Garden.

Stephen White said, “I am absolutely delighted that Joanne has joined our small team of trustees. For the first time during my

chairmanship we have a full complement of trustees and I am very pleased that the Policing Board have nominated Joanne to

represent them. I am certain she will play a key role in helping us fulfil our important functions: to mark the sacrifices

and honour the
