RUC Oral History Project
A unique Oral History of the men and women who served in the RUC has been officially launched at Parliment Buildings in Stormont.
The Chairman of the RUC GC Foundation, Jim McDonald, presented the Justice Minister, David Ford, MLA, with the first CD of extracts from detailed recordings made with members of the RUC.
The Oral History Project records, as part of the history of policing in Northern Ireland, the experience of members of the RUC GC and the extended police family.
The material archieved will be made available to as wide a public as possible. It will be accessible to all interested groups including schools, universities and other policing organisations
throughout the world.
In particular the resource will be used within the new Police Museum and eventually made available via other media such as the internet.
The Chairman of the RUC George Cross Foundation, Jim McDonald, said the project was moving on quickly.
He Said;
"We have now done interviews with 400 men and women who served in the RUC GC, and we hope to have 500 recordings done by the end of the year. These are people who made history, bravely serving in the RUC, telling their story. It is one of the biggest Oral History projects in the United Kingdom and it will be a unique collection of stories."
The new CD features interviews with 31 former officers about why they joined the RUC. Proceeds from the sale of the CD will be used to fund the activities of the RUC GC Foundation.
